Anotace

The advent of the theory of plate tectonics has made it evident that geology and the physics of the earth's interior are inseparable and that study of both is needed to ensure further progress in the earth sciences. Although there are many excellent texts for students of physics or graduate students of geophysics, and even more books on geophysical prospecting, few if any recent introductory texts present geologists with the more global or "academic" aspects of geophysics. The author has attempted to fill this gap. In writing this book he has assumed that students have had at least one year each of mathematics (calculus) and physics, and that they are familiar with the general concepts of plate tectonics. Several problems also require the ability to write simple computer programs. Although a knowledge of vector calculus is not assumed, partial derivatives have been used where needed. They are briefly explained when introduced, but a lengthier, intuitive explanation is given in Appendix E, which also deals with the directional derivative and the gradient.
