Japan has a deep political and economic interest in all Southeast Asian nations, but it is with Vietnam in particular (as evidenced during that nation's long and troubled civil war) that this interest runs most deep. Shiraishi's work is a broad look at the major changes, strategies, and situations (including financial assistance and development aid from Japan to Vietnam, international security and trade considerations, and the influence of the ASEAN nations, as well as the United States, on Japanese policies towards Vietnam) that determined diplomatic and economic relations between the two nations.
