Rok: 1999 AnotaceBy 1998 the Cyprus issue had reached impasse. Persistent efforts by the UN to help both sides resolve their differences and to enter into a federation had run into the sand. The much vaunted 'catalyst' of prospective EU accession for the Republic of Cyprus also failed to bring about a solution of the issue and indeed made it worse. then the proposed importation by the South of Russian S-300 missiles threatened conflict in the Eastern Mediterranean between Greece and Turkey, both members of NATO. This book stems from a conference held in 1998 in the Eastern Mediterranean University of Northern Cyprus at which international, Greek, Turkish, Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot experts gathered to re-examine dispassionately the substance of the issue and to seek new ways forward. A postscript traces recent developments, including the important proposal for a confederation made by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. No other recent book on the Cyprus issue brings together contributions by scholars on both sides and by international authorities. One chapter reports the discussion that took place after each paper.
