It is the first global legal instrument to comprehensively address all aspects of biological diversity. Following its entry into force in December 1993, the Convention now has over 145 Contracting Parties engaged in implementing its 42 articles.The Guide was produced to facilitate this process and illustrates the scientific, technical and legal issues which the Convention raises. It contains a concise general overview of the Convention and explains its provisions.
