Kagel ist auch Dirigent, Regisseur und Librettist. Sein Werk umfasst zahlreiche musikalische Gattungen, aber auch Filme und Hörspiele. Im Gespräch gibt der weltweit gefeierte Komponist Auskunft über seine künstlerische Entwicklung und seine Ansichten. Ausgehend von biographischen Erfahrungen Kagels, berühren die Dialoge das Judentum und die Literatur, das Verhältnis von Film und Fernsehen, Rundfunk und Schallplatte und gehen Fragen der Komposition, des Hörens und der Bedeutung von Musik und Theater nach.
