Distribution and Taxonomy of Birds of the World was awarded the title "Best Bird Book of the Year" for 1991 by the journal British Birds. In his review in North American Bird Bander, Robert C. Tweit lauded the book as "the most important... review and modification of avian taxonomy of this century, making all existing field guides and checklists obsolete."
