Anotace

This is a history of what national political leaders said and did not say about the Nazi past and the Holocaust in the postwar era. It draws on archival materials covering both the West and East German governments. It addresses questions such as: Why, given the support for Nazism in German society up to the end of World War II, was there any memory at all of its crimes after 1945? Why did the memory of the war and Holocaust divide along political lines as it did between West and East Germany? What was the relationship between dictatorship, democracy and memory? In 1996 the as yet unpublished manuscript of DIVIDED MEMORY was awarded the Fraenkel Prize by the Institute of Contemporary History and the Wiener Library in London. In January 1999, it was awarded the American Historical Association's George Louis Beer Prize in recognition of outstanding historical writing in European international history since 1895. The Beer Prize committee wrote the following about DIVIDED MEMORY: "DIVIDED MEMORY presents a masterful account of the interrelationship between memory of the Nazi past, the Holocaust, and political developments in the two Germanys. Based on extensive and pathbreaking new research in both East and West German archives, it places these two contrasting patterns within the broader context of German history and the international relations of the Cold War, and is particularly illuminating with regard to policy and doctrine in East Germany. Its scope is not, however limited to Germany alone, serving to enrich a broader understanding of the postwar period."
