Anotace

"Slovak Elections ’02: Results, Consequences, Implications" offers an analytical look at the voting patterns of Slovak citizens in the 2002 parliamentary elections. The publication is a compilation of individual analytical studies, divided into five thematic parts. Among other topics, the authors compare the results of the election in Slovak Republic to those of the rest of Visegrad 4 countries, focusing on their impact on consolidation of democracy in the region of central Europe. Authors further devote attention to the rise of the so-called alternative parties, whose presence in Slovakia is attributed to the phenomenon of "centre populism". In the section on voting behavior, the authors analyze the factors affecting the voting behavior of citizens of the Slovak Republic. The reader will also find an analysis of the positions of young voters (first and second-time voters) and their self-reflection, captured by qualitative analysis. Furthermore, the authors evaluate the election campaigns of select political parties, the pre-election activities of non-governmental organizations, and the role the media has played in this election. They also discuss issues that were part of the pre-election discourse, such as foreign policy, economy, rule of law and equality of opportunities. Such issues are considered socially significant, and can drastically influence voter decision. The publication thus recounts a key event in 2002 domestic politics, providing a glimpse at it from multiple angles. The authors wish to promote continuous self-reflection within Slovak society. The publication also contains two pictorial addenda from the pre-election campaign.
