Anotace
In Sexing the Self, Elspeth Probyn examines the tendency among cultural theorists to turn to their own life experience when describing the personal. Probyn identifies this evacuation of ``experience'' as a critical term in cultural studies, and argues for a move beyond the accepted mode of representation, in which no one can speak for another. She also tackles the issue of one's sexual self, a question of vital importance to feminists, yet one which has been neglected by feminist theory. Probyn further suggests that there are ways of using the idea of a gendered self to theorize about our non-essential but embodied selves.
