Anotace

This innovative text offers a comprehensive assessment of the role of management in the restructuring of social welfare in contemporary Britain. In the transformation of the welfare state since the 1970s, management has been accorded a central role. Managerialism has provided the link between - on the one hand - political commitments to introduce new markets, make public agencies responsive to consumers and create a new mixed economy of welfare, and - on the other hand - the institutional reforms of particular welfare policies. Though this process has attracted most public attention in the case of changes in the National Health Service, the impact of managerialism has been felt across the range of public services. New forms and ideas of management have had profound consequences for: the organization and delivery of public services; the political processes of policy formation and control; systems of accountability; and the experiences both of the recipients of services and of those working within public sector organizations. Examining the significance of managerialism both as part of the general restructuring of welfare and in the specific context of particular areas of public service delivery, this book offers a unique insight into the current shaping of social welfare. It will be essential reading for students of social welfare, social and public policy and public sector management.
