Anotace
This book is in the tradition of the Austrian founder of Old Iranian study on the Scythians, Wilhelm Tomaschek (1841-1901). Mayrhofer's book deals, on the one hand, with the continuance of a Scythian topos in the Middle Ages (up to Franz Grillparzer); on the other hand, it pleads for a seperation of Scythian in a narrower definition (especially Herodotus') from younger languages like Sarmatian. The book offers a critical examination of the writings on Scythian (during almost two centuries); the result of this examination is a small Etymologicon of the Scythian language. Scythian is the fourth Old Iranian language: besides the two corpus-languages, Avestan and Old Persian, and Median, which is only reconstructed from the influences this language had on Old Persian.
