Anotace

This book is about the application of the Monte Carlo method to the simulation of semiconductor devices. It introduces the reader to the Monte Carlo technique as applied to the study of transport in semiconductors, and to the modelling of semiconductor devices. The treatment is at a tutorial level, and spells out all the details of a Monte Carlo algorithm. Since use of the Monte Carlo technique requires an accurate knowledge of the physical system under investigation, a general overview of the basis of the physics of transport in semiconductors is also provided. A review of the Monte Carlo simulation of actual devices is also presented, together with possible vectorization schemes. The Monte Carlo technique is a fairly new tool in the area of device modelling, traditionally dominated by simulators based on drift-diffusion or on balance-equation models, so a comparison of the characteristics of the different methods is presented, pointing out the areas and limits of applicability of each of them. Even the reader with a limited knowledge of transport in semiconductor devices can use this book to become accustomed to Monte Carlo simulation and to set up a simulator for a specific problem.
