The Foreword is by Cagan H. Şekercioğlu and deals with the ecological role of bird populations. It considers the importance of birds and what their depletion may mean for the ecology of the planet. The volume covers 8 families, mostly from the Old World (Africa, Eurasia and Australasia, with the exception of the New World gnatcatchers and two species of kinglets from the Nearctic). Half of the volume is taken up by the Old World flycatchers and Old World warblers, which with 116 and 145 species respectively, are the most numerous families. These families, like batises and wattle-eyes, fantails, monarch-flycatchers, kinglets and gnatcatchers are mostly made up of species from habitats with vegetation (forest, woodland, shrub areas, reedbeds). The species of cisticolas and allies present the greatest habitat variability and may also be found in arid zones. The reader will find illustrations of the elegant paradise-flycatchers and admire the variety of cisticolas in a single plate, as well as appreciating the quality and interest of the photographs, such as that of the Large-billed Reed-warbler (Acrocephalus orinus), a fine example taken in Thailand in March 2006, and the first sighting of the species since its discovery in 1867.
