Anotace
The Duerrnberg mountain in Austria contains a complex system of salt-extraction mines, now completely infilled, which were in use during the Iron Age and medieval periods. This substantial two-volume report examines the results of a long period of underground excavation between 1990 and 2000. The text focuses on the medieval and post-medieval mining (from the 13th century onwards), for which archaeological and historical evidence survives. The substantial catalogue however presents the well-preserved prehistoric discoveries, which included wood and large amounts of textiles, fur clothing and other organic remains. The finds are illustrated in the second volume while a CD-rom presents a 3-D reconstruction of the mining system. German text.
