Anotace

The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries produced a wealth of original philosophical thought in Britain. These two centuries are often associated with Hobbes, Locke and Hume, who laid the foundations of later philosophical discourse. This particular collection was selected to pay tribute to the rich variety and wide range of philosophical discussion which took place during those two centuries, which, although influenced by these great figures, were also original and equally important in their own right. Another key consideration in selecting these eight titles was the scarcity and non-availability of their original editions. Most of these texts have never been reprinted and should therefore supplement existing library holdings of 17th and 18th Century British Thought. The only title published more recently, Luce's definitive biography of Berkeley which is included here with a new introduction by David Berman, was selected because of its exceptional importance for modern scholarship. The eight titles included in these nine volumes: The Works of Mrs. Catherine Cockburn in Two Volumes (Catherine Cockburn, 1715), A Treatise of Freewill and An Introduction to Cudworth's Treatise Concerning Eternal and Immutable Morality (Ralph Cudworth and W. R. Scott, 1838 and 1891), De Veritate (Lord Herbert Edward, 1937), Remarks Upon a Late Book Entitled, The Fable of the Bees (William Law, 1725), The Life of George Berkeley Bishop of Cloyne (Arthur Aston Luce, 1949), Metaphysical Tracts by English Philosophers of the 18th Century (Samuel Parr, 1837), The Life, Unpublished Letters, and Philosophical Regimen of Anthony, Earl of Shaftesbury (Benjamin Rand, 1900), and Materialism, Philosophically Examined, Or, the Immateriality of the Soul Asserted and Proved, on Philosophical Principles (John Whitehead, 1778).
