Anotace
This volume, part of a series on non-profit organizations worldwide, provides an analysis of the re-emergence of citizen organizations in central and eastern Europe following the break-up of the Soviet block in 1989, an event of profound importance in the history of civil society. The book explores the historical roots of non-profit activity in Hungary, particularly in the early Middle Ages, and in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The author shows how some forms of voluntary organization persisted throughout the 40 years of Communist dominance, due to the perseverance of the Hungarian people, and the "modus vivendi" they reached with the local Communist regime. She argues that the burst of activity after 1989 drew on these strong traditions of voluntarism. She places the current Hungarian non-profit scene in the context of its origins, contributing to our understanding of the role non-profit organizations are playing in the post-Communist transition process now underway throughout Central and Eastern Europe.
