This two-volume primary source reader contains over 90 items and is organized chronologically and topically, with selections ranging from Lincoln's "Gettysbury Address" to Elizabeth Cady Stanton's "Seneca Falls Declaration" of 1848. Documents new to the fourth edition provide more coverage of the West and religion, as well as a variety of political, social, and economic documents. Volume II concludes with a more recent document, the "Contract with America". The volumes include a wide range of primary sources: government documents, policy statements of organizations, speeches and statements of individuals on issues of their times, and fictional accounts of American life. These documents describe a broad spectrum of historical events and periods, and emphasize the diverse nature of the historical figures who have helped to shape America.
