Anotace
The Desire to Desire is a study of the symptoms of ideological stress in the genre of the Hollywood woman's film of the 1940s. Drawing on psycho-analysis, French feminist theory, and a Marxist analysis of the female consumer, the book traces the way in which female spectatorship is specified primarily by its lapses or failures, arguing that the woman's film simultaneously asserts and denies female desire, attributing to the woman only an impossible gaze. However, the very nature of its failure and of its contradictory projects sheds light on the difficulties in contemporary feminist theory's attempts to conceptualise female subjectivity.
