Courses for ESL (English as a Second Language) or ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students are taught in both 2-year and 4-year schools and may be found in a variety of departments including English, ESL and extended or continuing education as well as in language institute programmes elsewhere on campus. MOSAIC 1 is appropriate for students who score 440-450 on the TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language), 135-145 on the CELT (Comprehensive English Language Test), 50-60 on the Michigan Proficiency Test or 65-75 on the Michigan Placement Test. The MOSAIC 1 programme is known for its flexibility and ease of use. The texts in the MOSAIC 1 programme are filled with a variety of skill-building exercises, lively activities and interesting, practical information about life in the United States and Canada. New boxes called "What Do You Think?" now occur in each chapter of "A Writing Process Book". These boxes ask questions and make suggestions to help students develop their critical thinking skills. "A Writing Process Book" continues to emphasize the process approach to paragraph writing with a variety of pre-writing and revising exercises. Each chapter covers a rhetorical function, such as describing, reporting, persuading and so on.
