Anotace
Hazardous air pollutants have recently been identified as a serious pollution problem. Compared to conventional air pollutants such as sulphur dioxide, these pollutants are released into the air in relatively small amounts. However, they threaten human health and environment at local, regional, and global levels. Identifying and listing hazardous air pollutants constitute an initial step in controlling them. How serious is the problem? What is the best way to control it? Assessments are incomplete, and little consensus on the best means of control exists. This publication provides the first answers to these questions by drawing on unique case studies made in seven OECD countries. Examining such a range of control strategies lays the foundation for a global strategy for controlling hazardous air pollutants. A companion publication presents the proceedings of a workshop on these pollutants.
