Near to Far presents car and mobility systems designer Dan Sturges' solution for the “Total Transportation Puzzle”—aiming to deliver the comprehensive benefits of intelligent multimodal mobility (walking, biking, micromobility, transit, and new mobility options) that automobile owners will widely embrace. At 248 pages including ~100 pages of color photos, illustrations and renderings of future mobility concepts, Near to Far provides the concepts, designs, and insights needed for more sustainable transportation—creating choices that support environmental, economic, and equity goals. 30 years after the internet arrived, Americans no longer need to be automobile dependent, even though the country’s transportation system remains automobile-centric, with almost everyone outside of cities needing to own a car. With half of our trips 3 miles or less, and the average new automobile costing over $50,000 and weighing almost 5,000 lb., most of the country’s automobiles, SUVs, and light trucks are much larger than needed for many trips. As a result, a “far car disease” is afflicting our cities and suburbs, saddling communities with high costs, traffic congestion, traffic injuries/fatalities, negative environmental impact, land wasted on parking lots, and overall lower quality of life. Yet we seem stuck, struggling to break out of this old paradigm. Now imagine integrating smaller local cars into the future traffic mix for our many "near" trips. Imagine attractive new mobility services and extensions to travel further across one’s city or region on-demand. Imagine a community defined by safer, friendlier streets, in which “far” cars are just one part of a balanced transportation ecosystem. Dan Sturges' work began as an entrepreneur, creating a new Neighborhood Electric Vehicle, called the GEM car; which became a new category of vehicle in the United States. Since then, Dan Sturges has been on a 35-year mission to design our next mobility system holistically. His practice involves working on designing new vehicles, mobility planning, and mobility services—all at once. This cross-disciplinary approach means Dan is often supporting diverse design disciplines—such as large and small vehicle vehicle manufacturers, mobility service providers, government and advocacy organizations—and employing co-creation methods, that engage both professionals as well as the public in re-envisioning their mobility systems.
