Anotace

As events in Eastern Europe since 1989 have dramatically confirmed, there is no mistaking the crucial significance of nationalism as a social and political force. This timely collection of essays illuminates contemporary issues by placing the development of national consciousness in its European historical context. Why were some countries more successful than others in sustaining genuine national movements? Did nationalism impinge on the mental horizons of non-privileged groups, or was it articulated primarily by state elites? What roles were played by warefare, religion, education, language and ethnicity in determining levels of national solidarity? These and other key themes are explored across the traditional chronological boundaries in order to promote discourse among 'Medieval', 'Renaissance', 'Old Regime' and 'Modern' scholars. In terms of geographical coverage, since the book originated in co-operation between the Universities of Copenhagen and Lancaster, it is fitted that most of the case-studies are drawn from Scandinavia and the British Isles. But the broader European dimension is also kept in view, and this stimulating volume will be essential reading for all those with an interest in the development of collective social and political identities.
