The author looks at the continuing rise of ethnic conflict on an international level - the continuing violence in Beirut, Sri Lanka, Sudan and Kossovo; the "intifada" in the West Bank and Gaza and the divisions within the Israeli government over the Egyptian peace plan; border clashes in Kashmir; talks between Hungary and Rumania on the fate of the Magyar minority in Transylvania; the breakdown and resumption of intercommunal talks in Cyprus; Eritrean rebels claiming military victories over the Ethiopian government and attacks on food convoys carrying food supplied by the international community; unrest in Azerbaijan and Tajikstan and moves towards independence in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia; Chinese fears that such unrest in the USSR will spill over into China; terrorist attacks in Northern Ireland and England, Spain and the Punjab. The book discusses what can be done to reduce the dangers and suffering associated with violent ethnic conflict, with particular attention being directed at the interface of domestic and international politics. Specific ethnic conflicts are examined, notably those of Cyprus, Lebanon, Palestine, Northern Ireland and Sri Lanka, in order to see what common processes exist in the areas of conflict escalation and conflict management and resolution.
