Anotace

This book bridges the gap between language and literature studies. It is for Proficiency/Advanced level students embarking on an English literature course, and prepares them to discuss and write about aspects of content and style in English. It is also useful for students who want to broaden their reading, and for students who are studying for an exam which has a literature component (such as the "Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency"). There are 10 texts, from various 20th-century authors, including James Joyce, Chinua Achebe, Edna O'Brien, George Orwell, Kurt Vonnegut, Lawrence Durrell and William Golding. The texts cover the spectrum of literary forms, both fiction and non-fiction, including the novel, the short story, autobiography and travel writing. They are followed by a balanced selection of language comprehension exercises and literature exercises. There is an answer key at the back of the book. The material can therefore be used either in class or by a student working on his/her own.
