This is a survey of the literature of Canada, both French and English, which examines the myths of the New World, the journals of early explorers, captivity narratives and the work of writers from 1880 to the present day, such as Kirkby, Frechette, F.R.Scott, Hebert, Tremblay, Munro and Atwood. Account is taken of historical events such as Confederation, the Canada First Movement, and the Imperial Federation Movement as well as the main critical movements of each period. W.H.New is editor of the quarterly "Canadian Literature" and general editor of the fourth volume of the literary "History of Canada". His works include "Canadian Short Fiction" and "Dreams of Speech and Violence: The Act of the Short Story in Canada and New Zealand".
