Anotace

Both 'childhood' and 'the body' are of growing importance in sociology and social theory. The Body, Childhood and Society brings these topics together and explores the links between them. It examines how childhood bodies are constructed in schools, families, courts, hospitals and in film, showing the complex material, discursive and collective processes involved. Recognizing that children's bodies are a target for adult social regulation, the contributors show that children are also active in their construction, employ them in social action and resistance, and generate their own meanings about them. The editor's introduction draws these themes together by exploring the uses and limits of social constructionism for understanding both childhood and the body. Drawing on actor-network theory, he suggests that bodies and children must be seen as hybrid entities, constructed through material as well as discursive practices. In so doing he indicates new ways of thinking about childhoods as bodily and embodied phenomena.
