Oliver Taplin concentrates on nine plays including Aeschylus' Agamemnon and Sophocles' Oedipus the King. His excellent discussion of the significance of stage action in Greek tragedy draws out of the details in the text the theatrical techniques and stage directions used by the playwrights to highlight certain moments in performance. These are related to the meaning of the play as a whole. Through extensive and translated quotation, Taplin demonstrates his thesis of the essential unity of action and speech in Greek tragedy.
