Anotace
In this study Terence McKay examines the descriptive adequacy of the theory of Government and Binding for German syntax, and specifically for an aspect of it that has proved especially problematic and interesting: the properties of infinitival constructions with the verbs lassen and scheinen and with the verbs of perception. Previous attempts to account for the syntactic ambivalence between mono- and bisententiality of these constructions have been demonstrably inadequate. Here Dr McKay argues convincingly for a bi-sentential approach, drawing evidence from standard syntactic tests of constituency, etc., and also demonstrating that his analysis allows for a uniform and coherent treatment of reflexivisation, quantifier movement and topicalization. His book offers important insights into the stuctural complexity of German, and makes a valuable contribution to Government and Binding theory.
