JOWELL, Roger., ed., WITHERSPOON, Sharon., ed., BROOK, Lindsay., ed. a TAYLOR, Bridget., ed. British social attitudes: the 7th report. Aldershot, England: Gower, c1990. xiii, 333 p.
A compilation, description and commentary upon a range of current social attitudes. The information is obtained from around 3,000 interviews carried out by SCPR among a nationwide sample in an annual series of surveys. The series seeks to chart changes in British social values during the 1980s and 1990s in relation to other changes society. For the first time the annual British Social Attitudes survey has been extended to Northern Ireland, and the chapter in the "7th Report" discusses Northern Irish perceptions of religious prejudice and discrimination and explores views about the state of community relations in the Province. Other new topics covered are attitudes of members and non-members towards trade unions, and the characteristics and attitudes of the self-employed. Other chapters explore areas covered in earlier reports in this series and discuss latest trends; for instance, trends in concern about the environment, nuclear energy and nuclear arms; trends in attitudes towards government spending on welfare services (especially the NHS) and social security benefits; and trends in attitudes to home ownership. A further chapter compares the views of the British towards the role of women in work and at home with attitudes in a range of other countries, including the USA. Two Interim Reports provide updates on attitudes to "healthy eating".
