Anotace
Since the publication of the first edition of this book, and perhaps partly because of it, advances in linguistic thinking and in the study of the English language have entailed its large-scale revision. Professor Strang, taking account of the criticisms and suggestions of reviewer, colleagues, and students over the past five years, has performed this task meticulously. There are substantial additions to almost every chapter, including new account of register and dialect, segmentally indistinctive sounds, closed and open verbal forms, and stress; Chapter V on the Structure of Utterances has been completely rewritten. The scope of the book has been broadened by three new chapters on Phonology, Further Dimensions in Grammar (structural linguistics, sentence generation, transformational grammars), and Lexis. The bibliography has been brought up to date, and Professor Strang has reinforced it with sections of further reading appended to each chapter; these indicate where the topics discussed may be examined in greater detail or seen from a different viewpoint.
