Clowns, fools, and comedians of one kind or another have been a feature of virtually every recorded culture in the history of civilization--making significant contributions to the development of early theater and literary drama. This is more true in England than elsewhere, where the "fool" in various disguises is found at the heart of popular drama from its earliest recorded forms. Drawing on contemporary sources this book explores the role of the court, or king's fool, offering a unique, reign-by reign, account of the English court fool from his origins in Carolinian Europe and Celtic Ireland to Archy Armstrong, jester to James I. The fools' "motley" or costume is also detailed.
