Since the 17th century the Western world has consisted of a shifting set of individual, more or less autonomous nation states. Today, however, these states, whilst still individual, are more closely interconnected than ever before. In this book, the author outlines a new theory that places the politics of international relations in the wider global context of economics, ecology, culture and conflicting values.
