Anotace
Alden Nowlan was one of the most significant Canadian writers of the latter 20th century and truly the most genuinely popular poets of hus generation. Born in poverty near Windsor, Nova Scotia, in January 1933, to a girl not yet 15 years old and her hard-drinking husband, twice her age. Abandoned, Nowlan spent his childhood under the care of his paternal grandmother. Her death, when he was a teen, so affected him that he was hospitalized. His education had ended after a few days in grade five, so, upon his release, at the age of 14, he went to work in the village sawmill. Always an outsider, Nowlan consumed the Bible, library books and free pamphlets from the back pages of the Family Herald. At 19, his artfully embroidered résumé landed him a job with a newspaper. Until his death in 1983, Nowlan remained a journalist while he became writer-in-residence at the University of New Brunswick, a respected fiction writer and the co-author of several popular plays. He also gained recognition as one of Canada's most prominent poets after Bread, Wine and Salt won the 1967 Governor General's Award. His novel The Wanton Troopers, written in 1960 and published in 1988, was a finalist for the Dartmouth Book Award and remains a popular textbook as well as a seminal story of Maritime rural poverty.
