Description of and commentary on the current housing situation and the ongoing transition from centrally planned to market-oriented housing sectors in six Eastern European countries. Analyzes the quantitative importance of housing to these economies and outlines the broad structure of macroeconomic adjustment on which these countries are embarking-paying specific attention to the financial systems and construction sectors, which profoundly affect housing supply and effective demand. Ends by highlighting common patterns and key issues in the adjustment process, and proposing fruitful areas for external assistance.
