Anotace
The authors of each unique, data-based, and clearly written paper presented in this well-organized compendium use theory to achieve an interpretive understanding of some aspect of social life. Contributors were selected because of the quality of their previous research and because of their common interest in text, play, and story. The varied topics within the common framework are divided into three parts: narrative, shaping the text, and performance and inversion. Readers will discover the importance of text and meaning, as well as how self and society are always being shaped and reshaped. Stories must be seen as rooted in society and as experienced and performed by individuals in cultural settings. What emerges is the realization that every ethnographer must understand the distinction between the sociocultural realities he or she observes in the field and his or her genuine efforts to represent those realities.
