From Introductory Note: To my own satisfaction at least, writing this book has proved several points I try to make in it: that clear writing is very hard, especially if the content is new or complicated; that a text is never totally finished; and that writing, more than any other human action, forces you to take stock of what you think or know and hot it all fits together. Also, I deliberately (though without warning) made some passages illustrated the argument I happen to be advancing at the moment about writing and usage. But the main evidence rests in the approximately 500 samples I took mostly from everyday discourse, especially that of my students.
