Anotace
Kingsley's allegory of moral redemption and tract against child labour. Tom, abused, hungry and overworked, abuses in return. But after drowning, his moral sense is awakened and he learns to submit his own will to a greater good: physically and morally he becomes white: this book was published in 1863 and shares the prejudices of the day. The subjugation of his will earns Tom a second life, where he becomes a scientist and philanthropist. It's an odd mix of Victorian sentimentality and real moral anger, but it was a hugely influential book in addressing the wrong of child labour, and Kingsley tells a good story: you want o read on.
