'Rethinking Secularization' provides a philosophical appraisal of secularization in light of the recent re-emergence of religion in the past several decades. Rooted in both historical and conceptual analysis, it explores the adequacy of classical theories of secularization, as well as what might be offered in their place. In response to the simple secular faith of a global, world-historical emancipation from religion, the volume asks the question to what extent philosophy itself has nourished and inspired these kinds of prophecies. As a result, a more sophisticated view of secularization emerges, both more interesting and significant than the simple linear process it is often made out to be. Spanning a wide historical spectrum from the conceptual origin of secularity in Augustine and Aquinas to the secularization theories of contemporary philosophers like Marcel Gauchet and Charles Taylor, 'Rethinking Secularization' examines philosophy's own relationship to religion and modernity today.
