Anotace

This book provides a state-of-the-art account of how people's subjective sense of national identity develops through childhood and adolescence. Conceptual analysis of the various psychological components of the sense of national identity is complemented by a review of the research literature in this area. Drawing on his own national and international empirical studies, the author goes on to elaborate the developmental patterns that emerged. This empirical work is further contextualised by a review of the theoretical frameworks which can be used to explain these patterns. These include cognitive-developmental theory, naive-theory, socialisation theory, socio-cultural theory, social identity theory and self-categorisation theory. A final section draws conclusions about the development of the sense of national identity and examines the implications of these conclusions for the future study of children's development in this domain.
