Anotace

Part of a series aimed at candidates for postgraduate examinations in all specialities and especially those doctors with some training in cardiovascular disease who need to assess their knowlege of the subject, this book is particularly applicable to candidates for postgraduate examinations in radiology. By its nature the cardiovascular system extends throughout the body and involves all of the different organ systems. For the purposes of this book the disorders of the cardiovascular system which are illustrated will be confined to diseases of the heart and diseases specifically of the blood vessels themselves, rather than of the organs they supply. The cases which are illustrated reflect the types of case which may be presented in radiographic form in postgraduate medical examinations. Some of these conditions are common but have a number of different manifestations, others are rare but have characteristic appearances which should be well known. A number of cases deliberately deal with different aspects of the same condition. This reflects in part the numerical importance of these conditions in clinical practice and examinations and in part the frequency with which the diagnoses are missed or inappropriate investigations are carried out. This applies especially to the interpretation of the chest radiography, which is usually the initial radiological examination in patients with cardiovascular disease. It provides diagnostic and funtional information which is all too often ignored or misinterpreted. Particular attention is paid to the role of newer imaging and interventional techniques with which examination candidates should be familiar, even if they have little personal experience of these techniques.
