Anotace

The Russian Federation is at the same time a country of "Big Cities", "New Cities" and multiple capitals of individual federal states. The development of its cities reflects the development of the country as a whole and the evolution of its economy and culture in particular. The authors, Profs. Lappo (Moscow) and Hönsch (Leipzig) present a concise synthesis and discussion of typological characteristics and regional processes governing urbanization of the former USSR. Beyond a mere analysis of historical developments, current effects on urban centers, caused by the fall of the iron curtain are appraised; these have only recently started to take effect. For example, the authors find that the demise of the old political system has effectively brought the growth of the big cities to a halt. Furthermore, many mining towns in the North of the Federation are facing severe problems, as sufficient funds, required for investments in exploration and production of raw materials under adverse climatic conditions are unavailable. Besides risks, these developments offer new opportunities. For example, the improvement of the economic structure of russian cities, the passage of laws enforcing environmental protection coupled with well-balanced settlement policy will potentially lead to an overall improvement of the quality of living and economic opportunities. Many well-commented examples, illustrations, tables, and an exhaustive reference list make this book an important addition for libraries, the bookshelves of scientists and interested laypeople.
