Anotace

Have attitudes toward punishment – punitivity – changed in recent years? Was punitivity more moderate in the 1960s and 1970s? Probably! Since 1980 attitudinal changes have swept most democracies including Japan and Canada favoring stronger punishments toward offenders. As in so many things the United States pointed the way. A sharply rising crime rate there sparked loud demands for greater punishment, i.e., for revenge, whether it deterred crime or not. It didn't. In fact if anything it amplified crime. The volume presents international texts discussing the problem. --- Contents: Punitivity: An Introduction; Punitiveness in Cross-National Comparison: Toward a Historically and Institutionally Grounded Multi-Factorial Approach / J.J. Savelsberg; Crime, Fear, and the Demand for Punishment in the United States / A.M. Nellis & J.P. Lynch; Exploring the Differences between Punitive and Moderate Penal Policies in the United States and Canada / J.V. Roberts & J.B. Sprott; Punitivity in the United States / T.N. Ferdinand & H. Kury; Punitivity in Germany: Attitudes to Punishment, Sentencing and Prison Rates / H. Kury, T.N. Ferdinand & J. Obergfell-Fuchs; Post-War Societies and Punitivity: The Inquiry into an Underexplored Field of Research / E.
