Anotace
The linguistic literature devoted to the lexico-grammatical categories of the English verb is quite controversial. Among its crucial issues, problems of aspect-tense-temporal relations, syntactic valency, synonymy, phrases, etc. occupy a prominent place. A stringent sifting of earlier ways of treating these problems combined with a thorough genetic/synchronous and contrastive-typological analysis of a large corpus of linguistic material has helped us to shed new light on the essentials of the macrosystem of Present-Day English and to formulate new theoretical and applied linguistic conclusions.
