KOLLÁR, Miroslav, ed. Scepticism and hope: sixteen contemporary Slovak essays. Překlad Steve ANTHONY. 1st ed. Bratislava: Kalligram, [199-]-. 355 s.
A picture of a country can be painted in a variety of ways. Statistical yearbooks, sociological or political analyses, the results of opinion polls, global reports on the state of the society. But we gain an equally sharp and maybe even deeper insight if we learn about what and how people in the country think. That is one reason why essays by leading Slovak authors, through which it is possible to better understand what sort of country Slovakia is, have appeared in the 90s in the books and magazines published by Kalligram Publishers. It is from these that the sixteen contemporary Slovak essays, of which this anthology is comprised, are taken. It is no coincidence that it is entitled Scepticism and Hope. Both are equally present throughout the whole book, scepticism arising from lost opportunities in the last decade of this millennium and hope that the next one will be better.
