Anotace

The exhibition "Theater and Mysticism" was one of the events of an international cultural program "The Year of Baroque in Central Europe, 1992-1993" organized under the auspices of the Prime Ministers of Austria, Bohemia, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia in order to remind the nations of Central Europe of their common, centuries-long past. The ample catalogue presented here is devoted to one of the most distinct media of European Baroque art, figural sculpture, and features works from two artistic regions, Silesia and Eastern Malopolska. It would not be too much of an overstatement to add that these unique works are hardly known to the broader public. Against the background of the 17th and 18th century European art, both the sculpture of Silesia and that of Lvov [Lviv] were extraordinary phenomena whose character stemmed from the complex interference of widespread Baroque formal norms and the specific atmosphere of nationally and religiously diversified communities in which they functioned. The transformation of the universal norms of Italian Renaissance by the local masters yielded new artistic qualities, distinguished by the originality of individual expression and, often, features of anti-naturalism. The catalogue consists of three parts: Silesian Sculpture, Lvovian Sculpture and Related Works (paintings, gobelin tapestries, graphic arts).
