Anotace
The articulation of nothingness, the unknown and the ineffable continues to intrigue writers -- artists as well as theorists -- in various traditions. The study of the guises these articulations may assume in pre-=modern as well as modern literature, religious writing and philosophy is one of the most important areas of contemporary humanistic study. Illuminating Darkness brings together ten approaches to the themes, styles and genres of that which (allegedly) baffles the routines of language, knowledge and perception. This volume permits us to see how literature has formulated fictions and philosophies of nothing through myths, rhetorical devices and different languages of negation and affirmation. The writers analysed here cover various languages and periods of European and Nordic literature, including Dante, Donne, Dryden, Schlegel, Björling, Celan, Paavolainen, Szymborska and Blanchot.
