Anotace

Prejudice is one of the most enduring and widespread social problems facing the world today. This book tackles prejudice from a social psychological perspective, and contributes to both its understanding and its reduction. Readers are introduced to the major theoretical and empirical achievements in the field, and classic and contemporary life and different kinds of prejudice. Each chapter concludes with a summary of the main points together with suggestions for further reading. Three major themes recur throughout the book. Firstly, the author shows that prejudice is an ordinary, everyday phenomenon and not restricted to a few deviant individuals. This is not to imply that prejudice is inevitable, and a whole chapter is devoted to how prejudice can be reduced successfully. The second theme demonstrates how prejudice is a mixture of thoughts, feelings and behavior of one group towards another. The third and most important theme emphasizes the social nature of prejudice. Prejudice is seen primarily as an intergroup phenomenon, one rooted in particular societal settings and shared amongst the members of different groups.
