Anotace

Core Sociological Dichotomies is a series of specially commissioned chapters based on binary or dichotomous themes, and is organized in a way that will be attractive to students who want a clear and easily digestible introduction to sociology. Chris Jenks and his colleagues use the dichotomies to situate students in current sociological arguments and topical debates. For example, by examining contradictory pairs of concepts such as structure//agency, local//global, continuity//change, the student is introduced to alternative/ch /c0explanations for aspects of human conduct over a whole series of issues. Students will learn to select, with reason, the most persuasive and plausible explanations for why people behave as they do. The book introduces students to the traditions of sociology; the philosophies that have informed it; the major figures that have contributed to it (both classical and modern); the methods that the discipline employs; and the range of topics that have exercised it for over two centuries. Each chapter is written by practising sociologists from Goldsmiths College, one of the foremost academic departments in the UK. The authors are experienced teachers and many of them are researchers and writers of international significance. The editor, Chris Jenks, is Professor of Sociology, Goldsmiths College, University of London.
